In the wake of the founding of U.S. Offshore Wind Academy in Boston in September, Exportrådet (the Danish Trade Council) has now set up a Wind Energy Advisory in the United States.
In September a delegation of 115 people representing just over 60 companies took part in a business-to-business event in Boston, which focused on the nascent American offshore wind market.
The event was organised by the Danish Consulate General in Chicago and Offshorenergy.dk in partnership. Its purpose was to help members of the Danish offshore cluster to make contact with a number of American partners, customers and providers.
Another initiative resulting from the partnership is the Consulate General's new stateside cluster for Danish offshore wind companies:
Jeppe Fredslund, Director, Wind Energy Advisory (USA), Consulate General of Denmark in Chicago:
Why do we need a Wind Energy Advisory?
Offshore wind is a focus area for the Danish Trade Council in the US. There is huge market potential here and we in Denmark have the skills required to take part. From other industries, such as district heating, wastewater treatment and drinking water, we know that alliances and clusters are an effective way to promote systematic exports and solutions. These are vital to ensuring that offshore wind energy achieves even greater savings and crucial too for the sustainability of the US supply chain.
How much interest is there in the States for Danish offshore wind competences?
There's much interest but it's important to note that there is nothing to be gained from dictating to the Americans how they should build their new industry. We must play ball with local American suppliers, who also have an innovative approach based on their experience in other industries.
Conversely: Are Danish offshore wind companies showing much interest in the US market?
Yes, a great deal of interest since recent developments in Massachusetts. Only a year ago, most Danish companies would not have taken the American market seriously. They do now.
Have any Danish wind companies moved here? Are there more on the way?
Yes, and there are more on their way – in particular, players active in sectors other than offshore wind.
